We used to pay a tax to drive on the queens highways, which was known as the "Road tax". It changed a lot over the years, from being based on engine size to latterly being based on engine size/CO2 emissions.
The money from this road tax used to be used by the government to maintain and repair the roads, including building new roads and motorways (although it's debatable how much of the money raised was actually used on the roads, no way of tracing where that money went so we can only assume our trusted MP's etc maybe decided to give themselves a wee pay rise and some perks).
Then the government decided to change the name of it, and also do away with the Tax disc you got when you bought your road tax. Along with changing the name to "Vehicle excise duty" they also changed where the money went, resulting in none of that money raised going towards repairing our shockingly bad roads! Again, no way now of tracing where the money goes, and with it costing quite a lot, that's a lot of income the government are getting from the motorist with the public having no idea where it is going.
Inline with the change of name, and the change of where the money goes, the government then decided that local councils should be left with the bill for repairing and maintaining the roads! They also decided to cut the budgets for councils (and continue to do so every year!). Now remember, the councils do not get any of the money from "vehicle excise duty, aka road tax", so they are having to find and produce the money needed from thin air. End result; councils are now skint, have no money for public services let alone for repairing pot holes in their district.
The government are screwing over the people of this country, but wait, they havent finished there! Our cars are getting busted suspension/tyres/wheels from all these potholes in the roads. When we pay the bill at the garage for repairs (repairs which are not our fault!) the government is also getting money from the VAT on the bill they have caused us to have! So again, the government scores! And as for "vehicle excise duty", that was something you used to pay on a brand new car. My car is not new, so why the hell am I paying this tax on it every year (or 6 months)? It's tax for the sake of tax and totally unfair. The amount of money they are coining in, our councils, health service and education should all be flourishing. They are not, and continue to slide even further into despair. The current government, and all governments/parties before it should be held accountable for all of this. We pay these smarmy con artists to run our country and they are totally failing at it. So why should they earn such high saleries, and continue to get huge wage rises every year along with all the expenses. £200 for lunch for 1 person is absolutely disgusting.
So, here's the question: Should the government be held to task over this? Should they be made accountable for where all the money raised goes from vehicle excise duty, and also the extra money they have saved from cutting the budgets they used to give councils? Should money from Vehicle excise duty be used to maintain our roads?
